Cadets take part in Virtual Activities Program!

Cadet Thomas McNeil, of Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron 53 C.E. Monty, of Summerside, was one of over 20 cadets from across PEI to take part in a virtual Cadet Activities Program during this years march break. The five day program allowed junior cadets, like McNeil, to explore a variety of activities from Air, Army, and Sea Cadets. The program was originally supposed to be held in-person, but due to Circuit Breaker measures issued by the Chief Public Health Office, the program had to quickly be adapted to be held online. If held in-person the program would contain activities such as hiking, marksmanship, and even skating, if the weather allowed for it. Instead activities had to be adapted to fit the new online setting, while still being fun and engaging for the cadets. Cadets had the opportunity to take part in Knot Tying, a virtual Scavenger Hunt, and even a Build a Boat/Plane/Bridge Challenge. Andrew Stordy, an air cadet from 53 C.E. Monty, put his creativity skills to the test and built a boat. His boat, built out of a milk carton, toilet paper rolls, and lots of tape, was able to support the weight of over 20 coins while still floating upright in the water. The cadets had the choice of building either a boat, bridge, or plane. “The main goal of the challenge was to get the cadets creative, by only using materials that they had around the house,” explained Patrick O’Hanley, a staff member with the Cadet Activities Program, “It also gave cadets the opportunity to explore other areas of the cadet program. For example, we had sea cadets build planes, and air cadets build boats.” The Activities Program was overall a success and received positive feedback from all cadets. “While we wished that the program would have been held in-house, everyone still seemed to have a fun time and we received nothing but positive feedback,” states O’Hanley, “We hope to have another week long Cadet Activities Program in the summer.”
